Defraser is a digital forensics tool developed by the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) for detecting and reconstructing video and other multimedia from data sources, even when files are damaged, incomplete, or missing their original containers. It scans storage media and forensic images for recognizable codec structures—such as those from the MPEG family and H.264/AVC—identifies recoverable fragments, and attempts to rebuild playable sequences. Used by forensic practitioners and investigators, Defraser helps recover deleted or partially overwritten footage, preview and verify recovered frames, and document findings for casework and reporting.
Defraser is developed by NFI. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 0.5, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4. The names of program executable files are Defraser.exe, Defraser.GUI.exe.
